Frequently Asked Questions
What is mindfulness, and how does breathwork fit in?
Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present with what’s happening in the moment—without judgment, distraction, or the need to change it. It’s about tuning in to your breath, body, thoughts, and emotions with compassion and curiosity.
Breathwork is a powerful form of mindfulness. It invites you to focus on your breath as an anchor, helping you calm the mind, regulate the nervous system, and process stored emotions. Unlike quiet meditation, breathwork combines intentional breathing with body awareness, sound, and movement—making it a more active and embodied way to experience mindfulness.
At The Ma’at Collective, we use breathwork as a pathway to reclaim your power and protect your peace.
What is group breathwork, and how does it work virtually?
Group breathwork is a guided experience where multiple participants breathe together in a shared virtual space. Using a conscious connected breathing pattern, curated music, and gentle facilitation, you’ll be guided through a multi-sensory journey to release tension, regulate your nervous system, and reconnect with your inner calm. All you need is a quiet space, a device with internet, and your breath.
Is this just breathwork?
While breathwork is one of our core tools, we also integrate meditation, yoga, mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), and coaching frameworks that address mindset, self-regulation, and emotional resilience.
Do I need prior experience to join?
Not at all. These sessions are designed for all levels—whether you’re brand new to breathwork or returning to deepen your practice. You’ll receive clear instructions and support every step of the way.
What can I expect during a session?
Each session includes a grounding introduction, guided conscious connected breathwork, music to support emotional release and relaxation, and a gentle integration period. You may experience physical sensations, emotional release/catharsis, or deep stillness—all of which are welcome and held in a supportive, trauma-informed container.
How long is each session?
Group sessions typically last between 90-120 minutes, including time for new breathers to learn the conscious connected breathing technique.
Private sessions typically last about 60 mins, with the initial session at about 90 mins to learn the conscious connected breathing technique.
What should I bring or prepare?
- A quiet, private space where you can lie down comfortably
- Headphones (for the best sound and immersive experience)
- A yoga mat, blanket, or cushion
- Eye mask
- Optional: water, journal, or tissues
Is it safe to do breathwork alone at home?
Virtual breathwork is safe. You’ll be guided through the entire process and encouraged to honor your body’s signals. If you have a history of trauma, respiratory or heart conditions, or are pregnant, consult your healthcare provider and let the facilitator know in advance.
Can I turn off my camera during the session?
No. The breathwork practitioner must be able to see all participants from the head to the waist at all times. This is for safety reasons. Anyone with their camera off will be removed from the virtual space.
Will I be expected to talk or share during the session?
No. Sharing is always optional. You’re invited to simply show up, breathe, and receive. If you’d like to share reflections at the end, space is held—but never required.
How often should I attend?
It’s up to you. Some participants join monthly for a reset, while others attend weekly for ongoing support. You’ll begin to know what your system needs the more you breathe.
What kind of breathing do we use in the session?
There will be a detailed demonstration of Conscious Connected Breathwork prior to every breathwork journey. You’ll breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth in a continuous flow—with no pause between the inhale and exhale.
The breath starts in your belly, rises through the chest, and is released with a full sigh. It’s done at a steady, moderate pace—not too fast or slow.
This is an intentional and active breath.
What happens if I get emotional or feel physical sensations during breathwork?
Emotional release is a natural and powerful part of the breathwork journey.
As you breathe, you’ll be invited to work with the triangle of breath, sound, and movement—tools that help move stuck energy, repressed emotions, or tension out of the body. You may feel the urge to cry, sigh, yawn, tremble, stretch, or vocalize. This is all welcome. It’s how the body unwinds, releases, and resets.
We encourage you to stay open, soft, and curious—even as strong emotions arise. This practice invites a kind of active surrender—where you're engaged with your breath, but also allowing space for healing to unfold.
Everyone's experience is different, and there’s no “right” way to release. Let go of expectations, trust your body, and know that everything that comes up is part of the process. TRUST.
